FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Dr. Steve Cannon to Receive Dolmen Award for Outstanding Achievement in Art and Citizenry

September 1, 2012, NYC. Dr. Steve Cannon, author, educator and founder-resident-steward of A Gathering of the Tribes here has been named recipient of this year's alLuPiNiT Dolmen Award for Outstanding Achievement in Art and Citizenry.

Now in its second year, the Dolmen Award was presented last fall to Ms. Bette Midler for divine, unparalleled artistry and her tireless work with The New York Preservation Project which she founded to preserve, support and strengthen community gardens throughout New York City's five boroughs.

In a city where change is the constant, A Gathering of the Tribes remains at its original location at 285 East 3rd Street between Avenue C and Avenue D, 2nd floor, where Dr. Canon's home there has functioned as a vital hub for decades to countless artists, writers, musicians and ideas that have extended far beyond its doors -doors which remain open and welcome to anyone.

The award is given in appreciation to Dr. Cannon's continued commitment to art combined with his extraordinary vision, contributions to and practice in the support of direct, diverse cultural exchange.

Upon notification of the Dolmen Award last week, Dr. Cannon (b. New Orleans, 1935) said, "I'm dancing jubilant on the world trade towers that aren't there any more! "

An appropriate statement indeed as Tribes, currently in the midst of thriving programming, activity and recently celebrating its 19th Annual Charlie Parker Festival this past August, is also presently facing a potential disappearance act of its own as Dr. Cannon and Tribes are threatened with eviction by the building's current landlords of "good faith." (see NY Times, March 6, 2011, A Place Where Emotions Became Poetry Is for Sale by Colin Moynihan)

The Dolmen Award is scheduled to be presented to Dr. Cannon by alLuPiNiT, the new york city environ mental magazine, at their booth at this year's NY Art Book Fair on the grounds of MoMA PS 1, Long Island City, Queens on September 30, 2012 at 3pm.
