Hudson, NY – 510 Warren Street Gallery is happy to be exhibiting the work of George Spencer in a show titled “Old Forms, New Uses” beginning on January 6th and continuing until January 29th. Join us for the opening reception on Saturday, January 7th from 3 to 6 pm.

George Spencer is a filmmaker, poet and visual artist working with found and traditional art-making materials.  Spencer uses collage, assemblage and bricolage as a means of making the “new forms” in this show at 510 Warren Street Gallery.  Some of the work is photographed and incorporated into mixed media pieces which comment on a number of societal issues such as Crony Capitalism, prejudicial police practices, gender and environmental injustices.   Dysfunction is a theme in this show as is an interest in the disconnection between representation and reality that Spencer sees in most American discourse. Everyday objects, i.e., cereal boxes, plastic straws are meaningful in annotating the frivolity and wastefulness of Late Stage Capitalism.  One is reminded of the energy and dynamism of Arte Povera the mostly Italian art movement of the late 60s and 70s that attacked the values of the established institutions of government and culture embodied in work that was not necessarily permanent or crafted to withstand the ravages of time. The sculptures are made quickly without technology other than a glue gun, scissors and a saw.  They have an unfinished appearance where the viewer can see the process by which they were made.
